Alcohol Abuse and Crime - National Partnership on Alcohol Abuse and Crime
I recently found this organization, the National Partnership on Alcohol Misuse and Crime, online and was very happy to see such a partnership existed. So many crimes are committed under the influence of alcohol - yet treatment is hard to come by, especially if you don't have the funds to pay for it yourself. Health insurance rarely covers a sufficient treatment period. In fact, in many states it is easier to get help for drug addiction and convictions than it is to get help for alcoholism that has led to crime.
The Partnership states these goals:
Our purpose is to identify ways to promote public safety, reduce recidivism, and facilitate the rehabilitation of offenders who misuse alcohol by:
- Supporting and conducting non-partisan research, education, and informational activities to increase awareness of the problem
- Identifying innovative solutions and best practices
- Providing information and tools to criminal justice professionals including − but not limited to − judges, attorneys, and probation officers
Imagine how different crime statistics would be if we as a society addressed one of the most common underlying issues: addiction?
